Artist Statement - “I’ve always been drawn to using animals and insects as subjects, for their form and grace and contrast. I mostly make pieces about local wildlife, creatures in our area or nearby. Living near the diversity of the Laguna de Santa Rosa is especially fortunate for me – endless subject matter! Life here is fully present every moment, much of it hidden and secretive, seen and unseen. It’s easy to be aware of how many of us of different species overlap and occupy the same space.”
“Making my pieces on wooden rigid panels helps with the crackle process, and with the aged, sometimes ancient feel. Building up texture and wearing it away again gives the appearance of roughening that comes with natural aging. I use a number of different materials that often do surprising things, and I find I can’t control everything; chance insists on happening. In the mosaics, I make the tiles myself with some aim of controlling variations of color, but the technique itself is a little awkward, given to flaws and imperfections. I like the flaws. They’re reminders of the beauty of the imperfect, and the fact that all of nature is a work continually in progress. So, being reminded daily, I try to have my pieces reflect a sense of time passing, with a bit of wonder at all the mysteries involved.”
