“Great Dates with Gilbert & Sullivan” - A Sing Along

Elaboration: There are “great dates” and there are “great dates”: Gastronomical - Good; Romantic - Better; Calendar - in this case, the Best, as they are Dates throughout the year (in chronological order) which coincide with an interesting event involving Mr. Gilbert and/or Mr, Sullivan, their operas, or Savoydom in general. Led by the Sebastopol Savoyards, we’ll mark each occasion with a familiar song pertinent to that event. For example: On July 17th Gilbert was mugged on the streets of London! The Sergeant and Policemen rise to the fore! November 17th saw Gilbert called to the Bar. We celebrate with “When I Good Friends was Called to the Bar” from “Trial by Jury”. We’ll find Sullivan’s “Lost Chord”, joining in the Great/Grand Amen. We’ll enjoy a short Bab Ballad with Scott Hayes, Sullivan’s great-great nephew, in which Gilbert refers to a “Hornpipe” -so bring your nautical dancing shoes for Stand-up AND Sit-down choreography, as well as your vocal enthusiasm for familiar songs from “Trial by Jury”, “The Sorcerer”, “HMS Pinafore”, “Pirates of Penzance”, “The Mikado”, “Iolanthe”, and “The Gondoliers”. When a vocal break is called for, join in Blank Verse (non-rhyming) Dialogue with King Gama and his daughter “Princess Ida”, or sit back and enjoy the Overture to “Yeomen of the Guard” on the Grand Piano In fact, while we encourage all to “Sing-Along”, you’re welcome to just sit back and enjoy the entire evening, as is your wont. Either way, you’ll fondly recall the facts you hear about these “Great Dates” every time you hear or sing the music associated with them.
